New Location Prepared
Dirt work has been completed by Miller Construction of
Isabel on the land donated by Lawrence Woodward to the east of the
current church location. it was decided to place the front door of the
building toward the northwest so that the side windows and front of the
building are visible from both directions on the highway and from Main
Street. The double doors at the rear of the building will be used as the
main entrance so that the only one door to the inner structure will have
to be altered for handicapped access. This decision was made so the best
view of the building will be the visual attraction to those passing by,
and so that the main entrance and handicapped parking area will be
sheltered from the prevailing winds. The Board will be pursuing quotes
for foundation and utility work to be done in the spring along with
additional dirt work as necessary. The NRCS office in Dupree was very
helpful in planning and marking the area for the dirt work, and the
board is very grateful for their assistance. Foundation work will be
done this spring and plans are to move the building across the road
before Pioneer Days.
Quilt Show and Open House
The
Ziebach County Historical Society hosted a Quilt Show and Open House on
September 16, 2007, at the Old Church on the north end of Main Street.
There were approximately thirty quilts and wall hangings on display along
with antique displays that included items that have been donated to the
ZCHS. The special
feature of the day was a demonstration by Leora Burgee on a spinning
wheel that she has generously donated to the ZCHS. The demonstration
was attended by nearly sixty people who were quite interested in
learning how wool is spun. Leora displayed a cap that she had knitted
with wool, and she had carded and spun. This show
and demonstration was held in conjunction with the Annual Dupree
Threshing Day events put on by Lenk Restorations and other local
tractor collectors. A full day of history and the old ways was
celebrated in Dupree on September 16th!
Faye Longbrake honored at Annual meeting
The Ziebach County Historical Society named Faye
Longbrake 2007 Historian of the Year. This
recognition began in 2005 with Thelma Frame and 2006 with Virginia
Woodward being honored for their contributions in preserving the history
of Ziebach County. All 3 ladies have put many hours into recording
history and gathering stories and statistics of memorable events. They have volumes of writings, news clippings, pictures and family
information that date back to the origins of Dupree and Ziebach County.
Faye was recognized as the
2007 Historian of the Year at the ZCHS Annual Meeting
on January 28, 2008.
