News:

The ZCHS Board of Director’s has agreed to chair the special event portion of the 2010 Pioneer Days Centennial Celebration. Work has begun on a history book sequel to the blue Ziebach County History Book done in 1982. Families are being encouraged to write stories of their family and experiences in Ziebach County to be included in the book. A logo contest has also been announced with a $100 reward for the winning logo. The ZCHS Board would appreciate hearing any ideas or thoughts on special activities to lead up to or be included in this special 100-year celebration.

Several gifts have been received over the past few months that include original corporate seals, a wringer washer and spinning wheel from Leora Burgee, an 1898 atlas from Mike Burgee, the Arlene Thomas house from David Thomas, land from Lawrence Woodward, mangler from Bev Birkeland, furniture from the Menzels and several other smaller items. Thelma Frame & Bev Lindbloom have donated several binders of historical data, stories, and copies of old newspapers. The ZCHS is very thankful for all the support and interest from the community and the wonderful donors.

The picture book series that was originally planned for publication prior to Christmas 2007 has been postponed. There have not been enough pictures submitted to complete the project. The pictures that have been submitted will be retained and the ZCHS will continue to gather pictures so hopefully this project can be completed at some point in time. It was decided that efforts need to be focused on the 2010 Centennial publication for now.

Thomas House Donation

The ZCHS has been making good use of the Arlene Thomas house which was so generously donated to the ZCHS by David Thomas. The storage and meeting space is very helpful and appreciated.

New Location Prepared

Dirt work has been completed by Miller Construction of Isabel on the land donated by Lawrence Woodward to the east of the current church location. it was decided to place the front door of the building toward the northwest so that the side windows and front of the building are visible from both directions on the highway and from Main Street. The double doors at the rear of the building will be used as the main entrance so that the only one door to the inner structure will have to be altered for handicapped access. This decision was made so the best view of the building will be the visual attraction to those passing by, and so that the main entrance and handicapped parking area will be sheltered from the prevailing winds. The Board will be pursuing quotes for foundation and utility work to be done in the spring along with additional dirt work as necessary. The NRCS office in Dupree was very helpful in planning and marking the area for the dirt work, and the board is very grateful for their assistance. Foundation work will be done this spring and plans are to move the building across the road before Pioneer Days.

Quilt Show and Open House

The Ziebach County Historical Society hosted a Quilt Show and Open House on September 16, 2007, at the Old Church on the north end of Main Street. There were approximately thirty quilts and wall hangings on display along with antique displays that included items that have been donated to the ZCHS. The special feature of the day was a demonstration by Leora Burgee on a spinning wheel that she has generously donated to the ZCHS. The demonstration was attended by nearly sixty people who were quite interested in learning how wool is spun. Leora displayed a cap that she had knitted with wool, and she had carded and spun. This show and demonstration was held in conjunction with the Annual Dupree Threshing Day events put on by Lenk Restorations and other local tractor collectors. A full day of history and the old ways was celebrated in Dupree on September 16th!

Faye Longbrake honored at Annual meeting

The Ziebach County Historical Society named Faye Longbrake 2007 Historian of the Year. This recognition began in 2005 with Thelma Frame and 2006 with Virginia Woodward being honored for their contributions in preserving the history of Ziebach County. All 3 ladies have put many hours into recording history and gathering stories and statistics of memorable events. They  have volumes of writings, news clippings, pictures and family information that date back to the origins of Dupree and Ziebach County. Faye was recognized as the 2007 Historian of the Year at the ZCHS Annual Meeting on January 28, 2008.

Dupree Centennial Logo

The Ziebach County Historical Society has narrowed down the 11 logo submissions to three finalists. The public will vote during the Pioneer Days Silent Auction.
